A Diabetes Search Portal: Diabetes mellitus commonly known as "diabetes", is a chronic disease connected with abnormally high levels of glucose in the blood. Diabetes is caused by insufficient production of insulin or inadequate sensitivity of cells to the effects of insulin. Corresponding to these two mechanisms are the two most common types called insulin dependent (type 1) and non-insulin dependent (type 2) diabetes. With type 1 diabetes there is no insulin or inadequate amounts. With type 2 diabetes, there is usually enough insulin but the target cells are not usually sensitive to its effects. Both types have symptoms of increased urine output and decreased appetite as well as fatigue.
